The Finishing Touch

Accessories add personality to a room, and make a space unique

Accessories ranging from flowers in a contemporary vase to art pictures hanging on the walls all add the finishing touches to any room. Above all, accessories add personality; they inject a personal touch, making the space so decorated unique. Furniture could look the same, but the prints and curios used will definitely be different-if not in content then in the manner of usage.

Pictures add personality to the room; they absorb noise and can actually help change the illusion of a room’s shape if placed in the right places.

For example, horizontal landscape pictures help widen a room, a portrait or floral pictures help give the illusion of height. One large picture reflected through a mirror gives the sensation of additional broader space.

For a maximum effect and to make interesting wall arrangements that can become a dynamic focal point of the room, try to hang smaller pictures in a cluster.

If you hang an even number of smaller prints tightly together in a cluster; this will help balance out a large space and give a window effecting in a small space. Remember to hang the prints together tightly to create one unit and one focal point. The different permutations can be tried by placing them on the floor; and deciding which works the best.

For larger pictures, place them in proportion to the furniture. For example, hang a large picture approximately six to nine inches above a sofa or at eye level. Hanging a larger print too high above any piece of furniture can leave both pieces feeling disconnected. Always hang prints at eye level and use your hand in between pictures as a guide to space large and medium sized pictures.

Mirrors are great to help create the illusion of space. By cleverly placing mirrors on an adjacent wall to a picture or something that is interesting in your room, will reflect the image and add a sense of space. For darker rooms, hang a decorative mirror near a window. The light will then bounce off the mirror into the room portraying more natural much-needed light back into the area. To give the illusion of depth in a room paint one of your walls in a darker contrasting color to your other walls. Then hang a mirror on that darker wall. This instantly gives the additional sense of depth to the dimensions of the room.

Going into the domain of upholstery and soft furnishings, area rugs add warmth and texture to a room. The rug or carpet could act as a focal point to the room and tie all disparate elements together; or it could also be used to bring the furniture into a cohesive whole by grouping it on the surface. Once the purpose is decided, measures the size of rug needed before shopping.

By using other types of textile home décor accessories, you can create additional comfort and softness in using scatter cushions made with different types of material, loose throws of interesting material or even an old sari on your sofa or lounger chair. Napkins, place mats and tablecloths in the dining room or pot holders and towels in the kitchen all will give a lot of color and cheer to the room.

Home décor accessories play a crucial part in home decorating. Even without repainting walls and similar major expenditure, a very changed look can be attained just by rearranging furniture and wall pictures, adding soft light fixtures, flowers arrangements and plants, the placement of an area rug and using different textiles in a room.

Architecture & Interior Design Trends 2007

Another new year is here and there’s a lot of new stuff to look forwards to indeed! Don’t expect revolution in architectural and interior design trends because unlike fashion, décor trends do not move in revolution steps; they move in evolutionary steps.

Design trends will continue to emerge and evolve into fresh new looks and choices as last year’s colours and trends merge with next year’s styles. A lot of what we saw in 2006 will be seen in the New Year, in a more vibrant avatar, perhaps with interesting variations and twists. But there will also be deviations that you can take inspiration from. It would be nice if there were décor shows like there are fashion shows, and maybe even a décor week, considering the spends on home décor are probably much higher than on designer clothes. But since there are none, we peeked into the minds of the world’s best interior designers and architects, and into the catalogues of the country’s premiere interiors showrooms, and here’s what we came up with.

Design Themes That Will Rule

Energy efficient is now for real

The bottom line is beginning to hurt as energy bills rise. It’s cool to be eco-friendly and green isn’t it? So watch out for more prestigious Projects in India vying for LEEDS certification, a global certification for green architecture being promoted in India by the Green Business Centre on behalf of the India Green Building Centre.

Inside the home and office, you’re going t see a lot of energy-efficient lighting with the convenience of remote control lighting that allows you to adjust multiple lights at the touch of a button using the wireless controller – saving on energy and also extending the life of light bulbs.

Rainwater harvesting will be the rage, and so will solar heating for water and all manner of efficient appliances. Getting nature inside the home and office will be the other aspect of the green movement. Roof gardens, atrium gardens, green balconies with interesting landscape elements using Japanese-style rock elements, modern stainless steel garden furniture and even seats and lamps posts with antique look. There will be lot of water in the landscape and interior space, in the form of aquariums, lily ponds and mini-fountains.

Stress-free comfort for the urban busy bee

This will be the ultimate desire of the urban dweller-to have a home that will calm you down and make life easier. The need for low – maintenance finishes for the walls and floors will make washable paints and ceramic tiles more popular than ever before. Convenience will be a priority, so prefabricated interior solutions like fitted-out modular kitchens will be much in demand. Reading areas in bathrooms, lounge chair in family and TV rooms, padded faux leather upholstery, clean lines, floor décor with simple rugs and carpets, low seating, day beds-you get the drift, I’m sure! Seamless walls and floors and mono chromatic, clean lines with colour accents will accentuate the calm, composed look.

The 2007 Colour Palette

Yummy colours will be the flavour of choice in the new year-chocolates and coffee, and fruity colours like orange, red, yellow and green, but in rich hues rather than pastel ones. The emphasis is definitely on the natural and earthy. So no metallic effect please!

Rainwater harvesting will be the rage, and so will solar heating for water and all manner of efficient appliances.

The browns and orange of the 60s are certainly back, so certainly back, so don’t be surprised if you see those colurs on kitchen appliances and crockery as well. Mineral tones, soft variants of grey, brown, black yellow, green and rust will be very much in for wall colour in 2007.

Space Trends: Redefine, Highlight, Enjoy

Transitional spaces come alive

These will be the focus for the year ahead. Eye-catching displays in entrance lobbies, passages, vestibules between the storage and bath area, study corners will set interior spaces apart. This could be by the use of artifacts, a floor pattern, or the judicious use of colour in these spaces.

Dual master bedrooms

These are a rising trends. The new-age urban lifestyle sees two single people sharing an apartment. Or parents live in with you. Two master bedrooms are a convenience that does not require home-owners to struggle over that gets the premium space. No pecking order, no bad feelings.

Convenience will be a priority, so prefabricated interior solutions like fitted-out modular kitchens will be much in demand.

Multi-room master baths

The wife needs to do her make-up, but hubby’s in the bath, spurting steam all over the mirror!  Both of you need to get ready leave for work in a scrunched time span and why should anyone use the guest bath? Defined enclosed spaces separated by neat toughened glass partitions will be latest rage.

Open large-format kitchens

These are the objects of desire, but everyone doesn’t have the space for a huge kitchen. Never mind! Glass counters, built-in appliances, sophisticated well-ordered storage solutions, layouts that extend the kitchen area into the dining and living space-these will make kitchens look larger and more user-friendly too.

Architectural Trends Will still be vague

Architecturally, glass and metal rule the roost for commercial projects, while the residential architecture will continue to distinguish itself by a strange absence of any distinct trend or style. With the focus shifting to the interior space and a lack of ownership or urban design guidelines for city areas, architectural design is in a state of limbo.

This incoherent and confused state will continue into 2007 and further in time, till a conscious effort to inculcate an urban design culture and develop a character for every specific area is brought about.
